Chromolithograph after Carlo Pellegrini ('Ape') (1839-1889), printed by Vincent Brooks, Day and Son Limited, published by 'Vanity Fair', 1 December 1877, No 166 in the series, 'Men of the Day'.

Simmons acted as a military advisor to the Turks during the Crimean War (1854-1856) and was subsequently appointed British Consul to Warsaw in Poland after the war. He returned home to serve in a number of senior posts at Aldershot, Chatham and Woolwich. Promoted to lieutenant general, he became Colonel Commandant of the Royal Engineers in 1872. He became Inspector-General of Fortifications in 1875 and Governor of Malta in 1884. He was promoted to field marshal in May 1890 and died in Hampshire on 14 February 1903.
