Major-General Roberts and staff at Kabul, 1879

Photograph, 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880), 1879.

Roberts, the commander of the Kurram Valley Field Force, is the bearded figure seated fifth from right. He is accompanied by General Sir Herbert Macpherson VC (facing Roberts), commander of the 1st Infantry Brigade. Brigadier-General Hugh Gough VC, commander of the Cavalry Brigade of Roberts' force, is leaning forward in between the latter. Brigadier-General Charles Gough VC, commander of the Cavalry Brigade of the Peshawar Valley Field Force, is seated to the right of Roberts. The seated clergyman is the Reverend James Adams VC.
