A defile in the Jagdalak, 1879 (c)
Photograph, 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880), 1879.
The Jagdalak Pass, situated between Kabul and Jellalabad, cuts through the Hindu Kush mountain range. During the 1st (1839-1842) Afghan War it was the scene of heavy fighting when the remnants of General Elphinstone's army were finally overwhelmed during the Retreat from Kabul. It also witnessed much skirmishing with local tribesmen during the 2nd Afghan War.
From a photograph album compiled by Major (later Major General Sir) Alexander Robert Badock.
