Pathan tribesmen, 1879 (c)
Photograph, 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880), 1879 (c).
The tribes of the North West Frontier and Afghan border defended their mountainous strongholds with great skill and courage. Armed with jezails, long and heavy muskets fitted with a forked rest, they were fine marksmen and took a heavy toll on the British and Indian army units who entered their territory.
From a photograph album compiled by Major General Sir Alexander Robert Badock.
