Photograph, 3rd China War (Boxer Rebellion), 1900.
The soldiers were part of the 20,000-strong multinational coalition force that was sent to Peking's legation quarter to rescue besieged foreign diplomats, foreign civilians and Chinese Christians. The latter were under siege by the Boxers for 55 days.
