Smooth bore Pattern 1867 percussion cavalry .656 inch carbine, 1868 (c)

After the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859) Indian troops were armed with smooth-bore weapons much inferior to the British troops' rifled arms. This example was issued to the Bengal Light Cavalry. At least 8000 of these carbines were made by the Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield with others being supplied by the Birmingham Gun Trade. By the time that this carbine, the last of the smooth-bore weapons made for India, was introduced in 1867, British forces were being equipped with the Snider breech-loading rifle.
