Knapsack belonging to a volunteer in the 97th Invernesshire Regiment, 1795 (c)

Made of one piece of brown canvas, this knapsack folds in half to make the front and back. It is painted brown on the exterior and divided into two large and two small canvas pockets in the interior. There are six brown leather straps on the front and six corresponding buckles on the back, with one long leather strap attached to the back section.

The 97th were raised as a marine regiment in February 1794, but in December the following year it was disbanded. The flank companies were transferred to the 42nd Highlanders and the others to the Royal Marines.
