Presentation of a new standard to the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards by the Duke of Gloucester, Colchester, 1938

Colour photolithograph after a painting by G A Cattley, 1938.

This ceremony was the final mounted parade of the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards which replaced its horses with light tanks in 1938. In his address at Colchester Cavalry Barracks, the Duke of Gloucester referred to the horses of the regiment as 'gallant, uncomplaining comrades' and the inevitable sadness felt by 'cavalrymen of the old order'.
