Light dragoon shako worn by Major Thomas Everard Hutton, 4th (Queen's Own) Light Dragoons, at Balaklava, 1854
The light dragoon shako was introduced in 1846. Although more cylindrical in shape than its bell-topped predecessor, it retained the lace band round the top and the Maltese Cross plate. During the Crimean War (1854-1856) foul weather covers were usually worn to protect it.
