1882 Pattern Valise, 1882 (c)
A valise was a waterproof canvas bag used for carrying equipment. It would be worn on the lower back and attached to the body with straps as part of an infantryman's load carrying equipment.
From 1870, the British Army adopted load carrying equipment known as valise equipment. It distributed weight around the torso and could be adapted to different conditions.
