Summer Palace, Peking, 1860

During the assault on Peking on 6 October 1860 British and French forces looted the Chinese Emperor's Summer Palace. Twelve days later, in retribution for the torture and murder of European and Indian prisoners, including two British envoys, the palace was burned to the ground.
