According to the Hodson Index of Indian Army officers Charles William Grant was born 25 August 1804, the son of George Grant, a banker of Portsmouth. He joined the Army as an ensign in 1820 and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel in August 1843. Retiring in 1853, he became an honorary colonel in November 1854. He died on 1 December 1889 at Penn Hill, near Bath.
