1796 Pattern Heavy Cavalry Trooper's Sword
Although standard pattern swords had been imposed in 1788, they were not particularly effective. In 1796 new patterns of swords for heavy and light cavalry were introduced.
This sword with its heavy, straight blade and 'hatchet' point made it wholly unsuitable for either cutting or thrusting. In practice, it was common for the 'hatchet' edge to be ground down to form a point. Other modifications included the removal of a section of the 'disc' hilt to prevent it chafing the wearer's uniform.
