Tribesmen firing from behind rocks, 1880
Watercolour by an anonymous artist, 1880.
The Pathan tribes of Afghanistan and the North West Frontier of India defended their mountainous strongholds with great skill and courage. Armed with jezails, long and heavy muskets, often fitted with a forked rest, they were fine marksmen and took a heavy toll on the British and Indian army units who entered their territory.
