Trooper A Brown, 21st Hussars, 1893
Watercolour by Richard John Sinclair, 1893.
Trooper A Brown, 21st Hussars, dismounted standing by his horse in front of a lake, 1893. The subject's head is cut from a photograph and affixed to figure 1893.
Sinclair served with the 10th (Prince of Wales's Own Royal) Hussars until he was discharged in Canterbury in 1877. He produced watercolours featuring cavalrymen and their mounts from various units including the 21st Hussars and the 5th Royal Irish Lancers. He remained in Kent and established a photography business that was in operation in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and this may explain this and similar somewhat curious hybrid works that include photographic portraits of actual soldiers applied to watercolours.
