Captain Frank Cunningham Scott, 42nd (Royal Highland) Regiment of Foot, 1855

Photograph by Roger Fenton, Crimean War (1854-1856), 1855.

On their arrival in the Crimea the Black Watch were posted to Major-General Sir Colin Campbell's Highland Brigade. They fought with distinction with the latter at the Battle of the Alma in September 1854 before joining the army in the trenches before Sevastopol.

Cunningham was born in India in 1834 and was commissioned as a lieutenant in the 42nd in 1854. After the Crimea he followed the regiment to India where it was embroiled in the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859). He later fought in the Ashanti Wars in West Africa. He eventually became an honorary major-general, and died in London in 1902.

From a collection of 22 photographs by Roger Fenton and James Robertson, 1854-1856.
