Other ranks grenadier cap, 49th Regiment of Foot, 1751 (c)
This handsome cap is made of wool cloth with worsted thread embroidery. The front of the cap bears the royal cypher and the white horse of Hanover. The back displays the numerals '49'; this is a precedence number given to regiments in order of raising.
The 49th were raised in December 1748 as Edward Trelawney's Regiment of Foot from eight independent companies in Jamaica. In July 1751 they were renamed the 49th Regiment.
