Soldiers of the 2nd Northern Nigeria Regiment, making huts at Yola, Nigeria, 1902
Photograph, West Africa, 1902.
Yola is a town near the border between Nigeria and Cameroon (then the German colony of Kamerun), and was taken over by the British in late 1901. The local emir had been opposed to British control of Nigeria and was heavily involved in slave trading. After a short fight a force from the Northern Nigeria Regiment defeated the emir's army and the British took the town.
From an album of 145 photographs associated with the Nigeria Regiment and West Africa, 1901-1902.
