'The Remnants of an Army', 1879

Photomechanical print after Lady Butler (Elizabeth Southerden Butler, née Thompson) (1846-1933).

This work depicts Dr William Brydon arriving at the gates of Jellalabad fortress on his exhausted horse. He was said to have been the sole survivor of around 16,0000 soldiers and camp followers who took part in the Retreat from Kabul during the 1st Afghan War (1838-1842).
