Francois Henri de Montmorency, Duc de Luxembourg, Marechal de France, 1690 (c). Etching, 1700 (c)
The great French general Luxembourg made his reputation during the Dutch War (1672-1678), campaigning with success in Holland and the Rhineland. In 1675 he was made Marshal of France.
During the Nine Years War (1689-1697) he was again at war with the Dutch and its ruler William III, who was now also King of England. Luxembourg defeated William's allied armies at Fleurus (1690), Steenkirk (1692) and Landen (1693).
