Statuette of a piper of the 18th Royal Garhwal Rifles, 1952
Indian silver statuette by Hamilton and Company, on ebonised plinth with inscribed plaques and regimental badge, 1952.
Presented to Lieutenant-General Sir Ralph Bouverie Deedes (1890-1954) on his retirement as Colonel-in-Chief of the 18th Royal Garhwal Rifles in 1952. Deedes served with the 57th Wilde's Rifles on the Western Front during World War One (1914-1918) and was awarded the Military Cross. He also served in Mesopotamia and the 3rd Afghan War (1919). He commanded 2nd Battalion 18th Garhwal Rifles from 1934 to 1937, becoming the regiment's colonel in 1944. Deedes served as Adjutant-General, India from 1944 to 1946. He retired from the Army in 1946 and died in 1954.
