White metal magnifying glass belonging to Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Alexander Gordon, Aide-de-Camp to the Duke of Wellington, 1815 (c)
Gordon would have used this folding, horn bound magnifying glass to study maps, letters and documents. He was severely wounded at Waterloo on 18 June 1815 and carried to Wellington's Headquarters where he died the following morning. The Duke is said to have burst into tears when he heard of Gordon's death.
