The Sphinx at Giza, Egypt, 1885
Photograph, Egypt, 1st Sudan War (1883-1885), 1885.
Soldiers serving in or passing through Egypt were often keen to visit historic landmarks such as the pyramids and Sphinx at Giza. Successive generations of British soldiers captured or collected such photographic images, serving in the two World Wars or, like this photograph, in the campaigns in the Sudan.
From collection of photographs collected by Lieutenant-Colonel W G P Alpin, Indian Medical Service, 1885-1905.
