Glengarry badge, other ranks, 43rd (Monmouthshire) Regiment of Foot (Light Infantry), 1874 (c)
Die-struck, brass badge in the form of a bugle horn, with open work regimental number, '43', within its knotted cords; with two lugs on the reverse.
This infantry regiment was raised in 1741. It continued in British Army service until the 1881 reforms, when it was amalgamated with the 52nd Regiment of Foot to form the Oxfordshire Light Infantry. The unit's badge badge consists of the regimental number and a bugle horn with strings tied in three loops. The bugle was the symbol of all British light infantry regiments. Traditionally, the quick marching light infantry units used these instruments instead of carrying heavy drums.
