Glengarry badge, other ranks, 83rd (County of Dublin) Regiment of Foot, 1874-1881
Die-struck brass badge in the form of the regimental number, '83', within a garter bearing the inscription, 'County of Dublin', surmounted by a monarchial crown.
The 83rd (County of Dublin) Regiment of Foot was raised in 1793 for service during the Wars of the French Revolution (1792-1802). It subsequently served in the Caribbean and then fought with Wellington in the Peninsular War (1808-1814) and at Waterloo (1815). This badge dates from the period just prior to the regiment's amalgamation with the 86th Foot to form the Royal Irish Rifles in 1881.
