'George the Second, King of Great Britain', 1757 (c)
Line engraving by S Ravenet after David Morier, published by David Morier, December 1757.
Although he displayed great personal courage, King George II (1683-1760) had little flair for higher military command and wisely left the conduct of his wars to his generals. Nevertheless, his victory at Dettingen in 1743 brought him much popularity at home. This was the last occasion when a reigning British monarch led his troops in person on the battlefield.
