'Incident in the Subzee Mundee', 1857

From 'The Campaign in India 1857-58', a series of 26 coloured lithographs by William Simpson, E Walker and others, after G F Atkinson, published by Day and Son, 1857-1858.

During the Siege of Delhi in 1857 the suburb of Subzee Mundee saw heavy fighting as rebels attacked the British forces stationed around Hindoo Rao's house. In this image, a Gurkha drags a rebel from a building while drawing his kukri from his belt. The Sirmoor Battalion (later the 2nd Gurkhas) saw action in this area of Delhi alongside the 60th (King's Royal Rifle Corps) Regiment of Foot and long-lasting bonds were established between the two units.
