'Mutineers surprised by Her Majesty's 9th Lancers', 1857

Coloured lithograph from 'The Campaign in India 1857-58', a series of 26 prints by William Simpson, E Walker and others, after G F Atkinson, published by Day and Son, 1857-1858.

During the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859), the 9th Queen's Royal Lancers earned the nickname 'the Delhi Spearmen', a name which is believed to have been given to them by the mutineers themselves. They took part in the Siege of Delhi and the Relief of Lucknow. The lancers are shown surrounding a rebel ox cart crossing a culvert.
