'Arrival at Cawnpore of the Relieved Garrison of Lucknow, Nov, 28th, 1857, from outside the entrenchment'
One of 20 lithographs, 'Views in India, from drawings taken during the Seapoy Mutiny', from drawings by D Sarsfield Greene, Royal Artillery. Published by Thomas McLean, 1859.
The besieged Lucknow Residency was reached by Lieutenant-General Sir Colin Campbell's troops on 16 November 1857. Two days later the survivors of the siege were evacuated to Cawnpore (Kanpur) where they planned to join a detachment under Brigadier Charles Windham that had remained there following the British capture of that city the previous July.
When Campbell's force returned from Lucknow they found Windham surrounded in a small entrenchment and the rebels re-occupying the city. On 6 December Campbell attacked in conjunction with Windham and the rebels were soon scattered.
