Alexander Jack (1805-1857), the son of a clergyman, arrived in India on the 'Marchioness of Ely' as an ensign in October 1824. He served with the 30th Bengal Native Infantry and was a brevet lieutenant colonel at the time of the 1st Sikh War (1845-1846). Jack fought at the Battle of Aliwal and in the assault on the fort of Kangra in the Punjab. He went on to serve with the 33rd, 41st, 42nd and 34th Native Infantry Regiments and fought at the Battles of Chillianwalla and Gujerat during the 2nd Sikh War (1848-1849).
Brigadier Alexander Jack was serving with the 31st Native Infantry Regiment when he was killed on 27 June 1857 at Cawnpore during the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859).
