A panoramic view of Alexandria, Egypt, 1801
Coloured aquatint by J Powell after Capt Samuel Walker 3rd Guards, published by Mr Thompson, 1804.
This panorama of Alexandria was drawn by an officer who took part in the Battle of Alexandria on 21 March 1801. Samuel Walker was the son of William Walker of Killingbeck Hall near Leeds. He was an ensign in the 3rd Regiment of Foot Guards from 20 August 1796. Captain Walker fought in Egypt at the battles of Aboukir and Alexandria in 1801, in Hanover in 1805 and at Copenhagen in 1807. He served in the Peninsula War at Douro in May of 1809 and at the Battle of Talavera on 28 July 1809, where he was killed. A marble memorial to him, designed by John Flaxman RA, was commissioned by public subscription and installed in the Minster and Parish Church of St Peter-at-Leeds in West Yorkshire in 1816. Walker was also commemorated on the Guards Officers Memorial at the Royal Military Chapel in Wellington Barracks.
