'Death of Sir Thomas Picton', 1815
Aquatint by J A Atkinson, engraved by M Dubourg, published and sold January 1st 1817. From 'Historic, Military and Naval anecdotes, of personal valour, bravery and particular incidents which occurred to the armies of Great Britain, 1803-15, and her allies, in the last long-contested war terminating with the Battle of Waterloo', published by Edward Orme, 1819.
Picton commanded the 5th Infantry Division at Waterloo on 18 June 1815. He was killed by a musket ball to the temple. A tough, plain-speaking and eccentric Welshman, he fought the engagement wearing civilian clothes and a top hat, rather than the cocked hat that appears in this print.
