Maori fighting 'Toki Poto' axe, 1868 (c)

On 10 November 1868 the Maori chief Te Kooti and his followers, who had been engaged in a guerilla war against British settlers and their Maori allies, attacked the township of Matawhero in Poverty Bay, North Island. Over 50 people were killed, including several women and children. The dead included 22 Maoris as well as European settlers. This axe was recovered after the massacre.
