Cap badge, Imperial Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), 1900 (c)

Worn on a slouch hat by Private Benjamin Hodgson, 81st Company, 21st Battalion Imperial Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), 1900 (c).

Three battalions of 'Sharpshooters' were raised in 1900, to address a shortage of soldiers required to fight the South African War (1899-1902).

Benjamin Hodgson served duirng the campaign and was discharged from the Imperial Yeomany in 1902. He went on to join the 3rd County of London Imperial Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) which was formed from veterans who had served in the Sharpshooter battalions. It became part of the Territorial Force (TF) in 1908.
