The subject is shown wearing a red jacket with dark green facings and gold lace. The inscription on the back of this painting refers to Fleming as the District Adjutant of Natal in 1849-1853 and as serving in the 7th Cape Frontier War (1846-1847), and at Boomplaats in 1848.
