'Interviewing Cetewayo's brother, Oham', 1879
Hand coloured lantern slide, 1879.
Lantern slide shows were a popular entertainment in the 18th and 19th centuries. Many manufacturers of slides and the magic lanterns that showed them used ingenious mechanisms to create movement or animation in the projected image. This slide depicts Oham, the half-brother of the Zulu King Cetshwayo, being interviewed by Mr Rudolph who was the magistrate at Utrecht in Natal during the Zulu War (1879).
One of 37 hand coloured lantern slides.
