'Views of Cabul', 1878 (c)
Hand coloured lantern slide.
Lantern slide shows were a popular entertainment in the 18th and 19th centuries and allowed ordinary people to catch up with faraway events like the 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880). Many manufacturers of slides and the magic lanterns that showed them used ingenious mechanisms to create movement or animation in the projected image.
One of 37 hand coloured lantern slides.
