16th (The Queen's) Lancers in Review Order, 1905 (c)

This work depicts an officer reining in to speak to an accompanying subaltern, with a squadron of troopers riding by behind him. The 16th Lancers had just returned to Britain when this scene was painted. They had spent the previous five years in South Africa, seeing much action during the Boer War (1899-1902).
One of a series of 14 oil paintings depicting various units of the British Army.
