Pen and ink and wash sketch, signed and dated lower right 'A.H.B. Hume/ 2nd Lt RE', by 2nd Lieutenant (later Colonel) Arthur Henry Bliss Hume (1868-1960), Royal Engineers, 1886.
Fort Darland was started in 1893 as part of the 'Chatham concrete ring' of fortifications designed to protect the nearby dockyard. Completed in 1899 it was never armed and was demolished after World War Two (1939-1945).
