'After the battle of Tel el Kebir - Gen Wolseley cheered by Highlanders', 1882

Mixed-method engraving by Richard Josey after Elizabeth Southerden Butler (née Thompson, later Lady Butler) (1846-1933), published by Henry Graves and Co, 1 May 1888.

This engraving depicts the arrival of Lord Wolseley and his staff at the Bridge of Tel-el-Kebir at the close of action on 13 September 1882. The British victory over Egyptian nationalist forces led by Arabi Pasha was immensely popular at home, but the artist's husband, William Butler, (depicted leaning forward, to the right of Wolseley) thought it neither glorious nor necessary.
