Lieutenant George Clive, 1st Battalion, Grenadier Guards, Sidi Gabr, near Alexandria, Egypt, 1898

1st Battalion The Grenadier Guards took part in General Sir Horatio Herbert Kitchener's campaign for the re-conquest of the Sudan. After landing from river steamers at Khartoum they fought at Omdurman on 2 September 1898. The battalion left Egypt in October.

Lieutenant (later Lieutenant-General) Sir George Sidney Clive (1874-1959) served in the Sudan with the Grenadier Guards. He went on to serve in the Boer War (1899-1902) and led the British Mission at the French Army headquarters during World War One (1914-1918).
