Gun Boat 'Sultan' at Wad Hamid, Sudan, 1898

A flotilla of gun boats was formed to assist in the re-conquest of the Sudan in 1898. It included converted paddle-steamers like the 'Metemma', 'Tamai', 'El Teb' and 'Abu Klea'; purpose built sternwheel gun boats built by Forrestt and Company at Wivenhoe, Essex, 'El Zafeh', 'El Fateh' and 'El Naser', and heavier gun boats built by the Thornycroft and Yarrow companies in London, 'Melik', 'Sultan' and 'Sheikh'.
From an album entitled 'Khartum 1898', associated with the 2nd Sudan War (1896-1899).
