Lieutenant (later Lieutenant-Colonel) John James Eckford, 6th Bengal Native Infantry, 1850 (c)
Oil on canvas by unknown artist, 1850.
Eckford (1825-1872) joined the 6th Bengal Native Infantry in 1844 as an ensign, and was promoted to lieutenant in 1850 - this portrait may have been commissioned to commemorate that promotion. He was wounded at Meerut at the outbreak of the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859) and never fully recovered: he died from the wounds in 1872.
