Requisitioning supplies from a Boer Farm, 1900
Watercolour en grisaille by Charles Edwin Fripp (1854-1906), special artist for 'The Graphic' illustrated newspaper, published in October 1900.
Soldiers requisitioning forage at a Boer farm in South Africa during the Boer War (1899-1902), 1900.
Fripp produced the iconic oil painting of the last stand of the 24th (2nd Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot at the Battle of Isandlwana during the Zulu War. As a war artist he worked on a number of campaigns in South Africa.
This image is similar to another which Fripp produced to offset criticism of the behaviour of British soldiers administering martial law in Cape Colony. He wrote, 'Our 'licentious mercenaries' are engaged, as I witnessed very frequently, in the dastardly practice of purchasing provisions at the farmhouse and bloodthirstily bargaining for geese with the terrified inhabitants'.
