'Smartness', Viscount Downe, 2nd Life Guards, 1883

Caricature of Hugh Richard Dawnay, 8th Viscount Downe (1844-1924), soldier, diplomat and President of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).

The Viscount Downe served in the Zulu War (1879) with the 2nd Life Guards. As a lieutenant colonel, Downe served with the 10th (Prince of Wales's Own Royal) Hussars. He served in South Africa and Ireland during the Boer War (1899-1902), becoming a brigade commander of the Imperial Yeomanry and Cavalry. Downe retired from the Army in 1902.
