117th Mahrattas at a fort, 1909

The 117th Mahrattas, originally raised in 1800, were for many years known as the 17th Regiment of Bombay Native Infantry before being redesignated as the 117th in 1903. They assumed the title 5th Battalion The Mahratta Light Infantry during the 1922 restructuring of the Indian Army.
