'I do perceive a divided duty', 1880

Watercolour drawing by Major Thomas Strong Seccombe, for the series, 'Military Misreadings of Shakespeare', published by George Routledge, 1880 (c).

A soldier's wife, with two children in a push chair, greeting an officer of the 1st Life Guards as another officer strolls away. The quote is taken from Shakespeare's 'Othello', Act 1 Scene 3, and is spoken by Desdemona.

Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas Seccombe served with the Royal Artillery.
