Officer's full dress tunic, Colonel M Cholmeley, British infantry pattern, 1868 (c)
The tunic bears the facing colours of the 19th Madras Native Infantry which Colonel Cholmeley joined in 1868. The buttons and original facings are those of 24th Madras Native Infantry with whom Cholmeley did not serve, therefore it would appear that he purchased the tunic second hand in 1865, when he joined the Wallajahbad Infantry. Because of their high price, it was not uncommon for incorrect buttons to be worn, especially as many of them are difficult to distinguish even from a short distance.
