Group photograph of officers of 17th (Duke of Cambridge's Own) Lancers in the snow at Aldershot in February 1900. These men were part of the regimental contingent that was despatched to South Africa to take part in the Boer War (1899-1902) in the same month.
The officers are named as: (back row, left to right) Lieutenant Sheridan, Lieutenant Thompson and Lieutenant Morritt; (front row, left to right) Captain Portal, Major Ricardo and Lieutenant Brassey.
The South African Field Force Casualty List records the deaths of Lieutenant Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1874-1901) and Lieutenant Robert Alexander Morritt of the 17th Lancers on 17 September 1901 near Tarkastad. Sheridan and Morritt were killed in an action at Modderfontein during the Battle of Elands River immortalised by the artist Richard Caton Woodville in his painting, 'All that was left of them'.
