Steam engine, 1900
Photograph, Boer War (1899-1902), 1900.
During the South African conflict the British used steam traction engines to pull guns and supply waggons and transport troops to places not served by railroads. Despite this, the army still needed to use thousands of oxen and mules to move its supplies.
From an album of 100 photographs compiled by Col H L Templer, Royal Engineers, 1900.
